Eora/Sydney-based electronic punk trio Behind You have just released their new single Extremely, and it’s a track that’ll awaken your inner animal. This is a song that isn’t to be playing after the sun goes down, lest it draws out the demons that are hiding out in your house. It’s an unrelenting, thumping track that will work its way deep into your core and spread throughout your cells. It’s truly addictive.

If you’re a fan of industrial hip-hop, as well as acts like Death Grips or black midi, then this song is going to end up on regular rotation for you. I acknowledge that it’s not for everyone, but neither is the most palatable of pop music. There’s something about Extremely that eschews melody and traditional notions of what music should sound like, yet the song never loses sight of itself. The chaos is the calm. Behind You are able to let loose, but it never overwhelms them. Instead, it seems to help them ascend.

Speaking about the track, the band says, “Extremely is both a celebration and denouncement of the sensational. A car crash of the hyperreal. Say the word 15 times and it sounds like nothing." The music video that accompanies the track feels more like a fever dream than anything concrete, and I’m a big fan of the description of the video. The band says, “The putrid greens of an energy drink, coyote screech of a braindead Suzuki engine; Behind You finds self-worship and self-sabotage in all things considered ‘extreme’.”

Check out Extremely below. The song comes off their upcoming EP Absolute Forgiveness, and I’m excited to hear what the band is going to hit listeners with when the EP drops. It’s coming out on July 8th, and I think that Extremely is a great precursor. Keep an eye on what Behind You get up to next. Just don’t run into them in a dark alleyway - who knows what demonic spirits they’re in contact with?
