Brisbane producer Health Club has just dropped his first track of 2021, Have It Like That, and it’s got funk oozing out of every pore. The track takes influence from funk and soul to merge together the floating female vocals with electronic/hip-hop-infused production, and it’s the perfect track to jam to while you’re lounging around on a day off. Chuck on your comfiest clothes, and pour yourself a drink. This one’s written for those days spent enjoying the company of the most important people in your life.

The song swings itself along, and while it might not move at breakneck speed, it doens’t need to. Health Club’s talent lies in the small decisions he makes on the track, like the well-placed drum sounds peppered throughout the beat. I was instantly transported to an elegant, slightly intimidating lounge-type atmosphere when listening to this, one where you’re never quite sure if you’re actually meant to be there. I’m hoping you know what I mean, because we’ve all been in a situation like that at some point.

Speaking about the track, Health Club says, “When it came time to track the instruments for the record, I found a lot of my time went to tweaking the swing of things. Listening to some older funk records at the time, gave me the inspiration to get the drums and bass hitting the way they do.” He’s certainly hit the spot, too, because I could feel the groove right down to my bones.

Check out Have It Like That below. Health Club is one of the most exciting Australian producers, at least in my opinion anyway, and I’m curious to hear what’s next. This is the kind of song you’ll want to listen to with a mulled wine or cider in hand. Have It Like That is a truly soul-warming track, and one that’ll keep you toasty over the colder months.
