Melbourne musician Tanya George might have just released her latest single Normality, but it’s anything but normal. It’s entirely made up of her stunning vocals, which is a concept she’s pioneered while busking throughout Melbourne.

Ahead of the release of the EP of the same name (which is also entirely made using her vocals), I spoke to Tanya about how her year’s been, and how she’s making every moment of 2020 count. She’s got some wisdom to share, so you’ll want to grab out your notepad for this one.

Ben Madden: Firstly, can you introduce yourself and your music?

Tanya George: Heyyylllo! My name is Tanya George, and I'm a curly haired musician from Melbourne town. My new single and EP titled Normality is completely made out of vocals; a concept I started performing on the streets busking called vocal looped.

How have you managed to maintain a sense of Normality in 2020 with everything that's gone on?

By releasing a song called Normality and an EP called Normality. I thought it was important to keep powering through and releasing music even though these tough times. I am really glad I have. I've been going for long walks, gardening and trying to practice more guitar.

Your EP Normality is coming out soon, what do you think will surprise fans most about the release?

I don't think people realise that my EP is made entirely from vocals. I really try to make the songs sound full as if it's got instruments in them. I think people will be surprised when they listen closely to hear how much effort and extra layers come through. I also tried to make it all a very tight sound with cool but simple arrangements.

Can you give me your top 5 tips for chasing your dreams/making each day count?

Tip #1:  Humour! Life is really tough and beautiful fun dreams can turn into serious work very quickly. Whenever I find things start to get stressful, I try to use humor to relax and bring back the right perspective I need to smile.

Tip #2: Appreciate what you have achieved so far then use these thoughts as ammunition to achieve your bigger goals.

Tip #3: Remember you aren't trying, you are only doing everyday! There is no such thing as trying, you either do or you don't.

Tip #4: FAIL stands for First Attempt In Learning... No means Next Opportunity... and End means Effort Never Dies. These all apply to following your dreams.

Tip #5: Write a list of all the things you need to do so you can tick off as many as you can so you feel like you are working and achieving.

Finally, where do you see yourself in 12 months and what will you be doing?

Either back touring the festival circuit, Australia (or hopefully the world). I hope to have my debut album complete. Otherwise, I will be on the top of Mt Fuji or somewhere travelling in Japan!
