Melbourne soul-pop artist JAYDEAN has just dropped his new single Sugar, and it’s sweet as can be. It’s a throwback to the disco era, with a healthy serving of funk thrown in. It’s no wonder he’s received co-signs from the likes of Ariana Grande and Ruel - because this song is seriously addictive.

JAYDEAN’s vocals feel right at home amongst the disco grooves, and it feels like this might just be his natural lane. The keys and basslines sit under his voice like a comfortable couch - familiar, yet always equally enjoyable. However, every now and them a particular lyric will jolt you, and you’ll feel the sugar rush go straight through your veins again. It’s the delicious taste of sugar, without the associated health benefits.

Speaking about the track, JAYDEAN says, “I started writing this song with Tentendo at his home studio, and I told him that I wanted to do something different to the music I had out at the time. I wanted to channel disco and funk because they’re genres that I listened to growing up. It was probably one of the most flowing sessions I’ve ever had. I later passed the track onto Rob Amoruso [who] blew it out of the water. He helped me write the bridge which is based on percussive elements and vocal sound effects.

“The song is based around having an intense crush on someone, and thinking about that person constantly, not knowing what it is that makes you feel so drawn to them. All you know is that you want to see them all the time. The use of the word Sugar is a metaphor because your attraction to this crush is almost like an addiction.”

There’s something dangerously sweet about a crush. You don’t know what’s going to happen, but you’re happy you’re along for the ride. That’s how I feel when I’m listening to Sugar. It takes some twists and turns, but each is absolutely delightful. Tentendo and Rob Amoruso’s production sits in tandem with JAYDEAN’s vocals, and it proves he knows exactly what he wants out of his production choices. Long may disco continue.

Check out Sugar below. JAYDEAN has been getting people’s attention through a recent string of singles, and I can’t wait for him to drop a project. His penchant for storytelling is begging for a project where he can weave a longer, more complete story - and I’m sure his already-impressive fanbase would agree. If you’re looking for the audio equivalent of a Friday knock-off drink, then Sugar is what you need.
