Melbourne artists MAMMOTH. and Earf have teamed up for the brooding CATNIP, and it’s a track that’ll leave you wanting more. MAMMOTH. takes care of the bars, while Earf comes in clutch with the production. It’s a track that is representative of the talent coming out of Melbourne’s hip-hop scene at the moment, and it sounds like a throwback to hip-hop’s golden age. Earf’s drums sound like they’ll fill any room, while MAMMOTH.’s confidence is infectious.

Reading through the lyrics of CATNIP reveal just how intricate MAMMOTH.’s rhyme schemes are, and it’ll catch you by surprise. The first time around, I was immediately drawn in by his flow, but as I hit the repeat button, I got a glimpse of the inner workings of his mind. MAMMOTH. is reciting lines from his journal on the mic, and you’ll feel like he’s a close friend by the end of the track.

Speaking about the track, MAMMOTH. says, “While writing CATNIP I was down on money and was doing different things to get by. This song is a representation of what I would do, telling a story of going from one destination to the other, and how I felt I was perceived at the time. It is a day in the life of the MAMMOTH.”

Earf echoed his thoughts, saying, “At the time I was in Perth staying with family and I was making a lot of music. I’d been bouncing ideas back and forth with MAMMOTH and he was talking about his daily life during the lockdown. After 10 minutes, I sent the beat and I got the vocals back and boom, we had CATNIP.”
